What do “natural facts,” “the new normal,” “creativity and innovation,” and “groundswell” have in common?

They are themes from the various film festivals where Avi Lewis’ short documentary “Keepers of the Future” has been screened: Big Sky Documentary Film Festival in Missoula MT; the 2017 Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride, CO; Frozen River Film Festival in Winona, MN; and Wild & Scenic Film Festival in Nevada City, CA.
Shot in El Salvador,”Keepers of the Future” is about the powerful lessons our Salvadoran partners have to teach the world.
We are so glad that the festival selection committees were able to see how the work of our partners La Coordinadora and the Mangrove Association in the Lower Lempa of El Salvador speaks to each of the festivals’ themes.

We are experiencing the natural fact that because of human activity, we are living in a warming world. Extreme weather events are becoming increasingly powerful and today, all of us are potentially living on the front lines of climate chaos.
This could very well be our new normal. But, thanks to the creativity and innovation of people like our Salvadoran partners who are building resilient communities and protecting and restoring ecosystems like the mangrove forest of the Bay of Jiquilisco — the very same mangrove forest that provides protection from extreme weather events and sequesters even more carbon acre for acre than tropical rainforest.
It’s our hope and our vision that these actions and these powerful lessons about community organizing, peace-building, resilience, climate adaptation, environmental protection, and practicing radical democracy inspire a groundswell of activism to stop climate catastrophe from becoming our permanent reality.
